Melanie (b. 1992) is a Chinese Jewish(ish) American photographer currently based in New York City.
She formerly served as a Board Member at The Humanology Project, a non-profit focused on destigmatizing mental and neurological illness. She's particularly curious how stigma/shame intersect within cultural contexts, more specifically the interplays around class, race, and sexual expression. Growing up in a conservative household and seeing firsthand how the barriers of shame prevent people from seeking medical care and support, she's devoted detangling these topics. She studied Photojournalism at Boston University. She speaks English and Cantonese Chinese.
Select clients: NBC Asian America, Dia&Co., New York Partnerships for Parks, DSNY, The Kitchn, Harvard Gazette, Clinton Global Initiative, and the former Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick. She is also a contributor at Apartment Therapy.
She's currently directing her first film, a documentary about the experience and history of mixed race Asian America.
In her free time she enjoys cooking elaborate meals, practicing ashtanga yoga, and swimming.
She often travels within the US and internationally.
